Flat feet
Flat feet, or pes planus, is the general description for not having an arch while standing. Flat feet are normal in most infants and young children because we do not develop an arch in standing until around age six. However, one in five people do not develop an arch at all and this foot type often runs in families.
People with flat feet may experience no symptoms. However, if you have flat feet you may be more prone to experiencing tired feet, pain in the arch or the bottom of your foot, and in some cases leg pain or back pain. This can be especially problematic for people who are very active, or work on their feet all day.
Our podiatrists are highly qualified to assess your foot type and conduct a thorough biomechanical assessment of your feet and ankles to assess the cause of your tired or sore feet. They are then able to discuss treatment options with you that may include taping techniques, stretches and exercises, shoe advice, or an orthotic in certain circumstances.
