Fungal nails
Fungal nails (onychomycosis) are caused when a fungal infection enters your toenail through cracks in or underneath the nail. A fungal infection can make the toenail change in colour or thickness often making the nails more difficult to cut.
Our podiatrists will assess the toenail to ascertain the extent of the infection, and may collect a nail scraping to be sent for further pathology testing. If a fungal infection and its causes are left unmanaged, the infection could spread to your other toenails.
Fungal nails are a common problem, and our podiatrists regularly discuss with their clients the variety of treatment options available and help to increase their effectiveness. Podiatrists also have specialised tools for reducing the thickness of the affected nails if you are having difficulty cutting them at home.
